Eight is Enough
Haiku

I was feeling really bad one day. I work at the information desk at my school and usually its a good day, but that day was not one of those days. So I decided to write a haiku. I feel that this cartoon best expresses my emotion that day. I used Quark and just played around with the type, font, and color etc.
Thanksgiving through the life of family and friends
I love Thanksgiving and wanted to find out if the meaning of Thanksgiving changes as you get older. As well as what this holiday means depending on the individual. So I interviewed my little cousin and my two friends and asked them what Thanksgiving actually means to them. I found it very interesting and hopefully you will too! Enjoy!

Map of Bars, Bar/Restaurant Drink Specials near The Rutgers University Campus in New Brunswick, NJ
View Bars, Bar/Restaurant, Drink Specials in a larger map
Here is a map of the bars and bar/restaurant that I found had great drink specials. I thought that this was a great idea because as a recent 21 year old who is on a college budget I wanted to find out what bars or bar/restaurant offer specials for drinks as well as I'm sure other college students would be looking for as well. So I searched on Google for bars and bars/restaurant in New Brunswick, NJ or close to Rutgers University. I would go to the website of the bars, bar/restaurants that I found to see if they had any drink specials. If they didn't have a website I would just call the number that was listed online. If I couldn't get in touch with anyone or couldn't find information that helped my research I would just search for another bar and bar/restaurant.

The Twilight look
On Allure’s website it has” 8 Hair and Makeup Tricks Inspired by Twilight.” This topic definitely caught my attention because I am a Twilight fan as well as the fact that New Moon has just recently came out so it’s a great way to get people to go on the website as well as buy the magazine. They have topics such as how to have glowing skin, just bitten lips, smooth hair, pale skin, sexy eyes, an even complexion, shiny hair, and piercing eyes. Just the topic of Twilight made me interested in flipping the page or to click on the link. I felt like they gave easy instructions about how exactly to get each look that I, a non-makeup person would try.
Elle on Victoria Secret Fashion Show
Elle News Blog showed some pictures and a link to a video of Victoria Secret’s Fashion show. I really love the picture choice that they choose because I felt that it represented what exactly happen in the show. I love, love, love, the show I felt that the costumes were very original and that the design of the stage went well with the attire. They also had an in depth look at what happen behind the scenes during the fashion show, interviews with the models as well as the designs of the wings. The whole production was very entertaining and appealing. I give the whole show and Elle’s cover on it 5 stars!
Hillary Clinton
In Vogue magazine website they did a feature on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. I felt that they did a great job in showing her in a positive light. Instead of the negative press that she so easily gets. It showed her as a person who is strong but also her humanity and how she really was surprised that she was asked to become Secretary of State. I just liked in general how they were able to show Clinton for the person that she really is.
" Big Girl in a Skinny World"
In Marie Claire magazine I came across something that I loved and felt was very rare as a topic being discussed in magazines. So many magazines have so many discussions about how to lose such in such pounds in how many days or about diet secrets. Not to say that this is bad because I believe we should always be searching for a way to be healthier in a time where it is so easy to be hooked on fast food and in a state where many of us are overweight. I felt very happy to see that Marie Claire highlighted Ashley Falcon (a former intern) in her column “Big Girl in a Skinny World”. Falcon’s column focuses on what ladies who are plus size can do in a world that doesn’t have as many options as let’s say their skinny counter parts. She gives fashion tips of what to wear as well as where exactly a person can go to find these items. Also on their website they show her column and a link to her blog where she express more about what “ big girls” can do when trying to look fashionable. I just really love how Marie Claire decided to step outside of the box and focus on those readers who sometimes go unnoticed.

InStyle
While reading the December issue of InStyle magazine I notice that many of the pages contained a lot of pictures and issues that would be relevant because of the approaching holiday season as well as the beginning of the end of the year. I felt that the cover was even more beautiful having Taylor Swift on their with her gold sequin dress. It made me want to by the magazine even more because of the cover page was so appealing. They have many things that I found that I could use for the month of December as well as wrapping up this year. Such things as “Style 100” for this year which described all the fashion do’s of 2009. It also had an interview with the star of Twilight and New Moon Taylor Lautner, a gift guide for December, and the top 10 party hairstyles. It also added an extra bonus by making the cover 3-D where you would have to go to the website to see the secret message from country singer Taylor Swift. I felt that this was a perfect marketing strategy because it lures the reader to go to their website.I liked the visual appeal of the magazine but for me even though this magazine is fashion based I just wished I saw more text. I wish that there were more story related articles. I know that a picture is more appealing than actual text when it comes to selling your product. But I think there can be a balance to having pictures and text instead of just having a sentence or two underneath the picture. I don’t want to buy a magazine where I can be done with it in seconds because all I have to do is flip the pages. Though, InStyle do have some stories included in their December issue I just wished that there was a more of a cohesive presentation that showed both visual and mental appeal.

Where are all the colors?
Teen Vogue...no,Vogue...no, Cosmo Girl...no, Elle...no, Glamour...no, and Bazaar... no. I don't understand where all the colored people have gone. There is little to no representation of women of color in these fashion magazines. I didn't realize this until I was on Twitter and I got a tweet about an article about hair products that women of color can use. I was excited to see there was at least some representation for women of color. Well "not to my surprise" it was the smallest article. It really didn't talk about much of the topic that they advertised for. It just upset me that its 2009 and this is still an issue. There should not be a need to go only to specific ethnic magazine to get information about your ethnicity. There should be more representation of women of color since there are people of color in this race and not just one.
